Robbie Hernstad is no stranger to Mosaic Art. He grew up in a household with walls adorned with artwork of his late legendary Great Uncle, Hans Unger. These large modern pieces fascinated him, and he studied them for hours from a young age. Robbie grew up in South Africa where he joined his family’s successful textile business. A decade later he moved with his family to the United States. It was here that he discovered his true passion.

Robbie follows family tradition creating unique works of Mosaic Art, using the finest materials available. Expressing celestial themes and geometric shapes, he uses Venetian Smalti, marble, vitreous glass, slate, ceramics and modern metals. He creates both fine wall hangings and free standing sculptures while capturing ancient ideas and theologies. As a self taught artist, his work is pure and clearly comes from deep within.

His extensive travels throughout the world began his fascination with ancient cultures and spirituality. This plays a major role in his life and is reflected in his art. He grew up in a diverse country where he was able to connect deeply with nature. His family’s Game Reserve enabled him to learn everything about African wildlife. This love of nature extends to the Ocean where he spent many hours diving the exotic coastlines of Africa.
